Le département de Bibliophilie présente de rares ouvrages provenant essentiellement de deux riches bibliothèques privées, dont l’exceptionnelle collection d’un amateur genevois de livres modernes illustrés et celle de l’ancien ministre Henry Vallotton.
Après une fructueuse carrière politique vaudoise, Henry Vallotton (1891-1971) devient, en 1943, ministre de la Suisse auprès du Brésil, puis de la Suède et de divers pays. Ses voyages aux quatre coins du monde et son goût inhérent pour la littérature l’ont conduit à rédiger ses propres ouvrages, dont des biographies plusieurs fois primées telles que celles de Catherine II, Pierre le Grand, Elisabeth d’Autriche ou encore Bismarck. Au fil du temps s’est constituée une bibliothèque hétéroclite où se mêlent aussi bien ouvrages du passé et du présent que littérature régionale et internationale.
