Le photographe italien Pietro Dovizielli s’était fait connaître pour avoit présenté son travail en 1855 dans plusieurs exposi-
tions à Paris, Londres et Glasgow. C’est donc à lui que quatre ans plus tard, Henry Cole, l’organisateur de l’exposition du
Cristal Palace de 1851 et l’inventeur de la carte de noël, en mission pour le tout nouveau Victoria and Albert Museum s’adresse
pour commander 44 vues des plus beaux monuments romains. Ce travail qui représente un sommet de la photographie dans la
ville éternelle était avant tout destiné à enrichir la bibliothèque du V&A. Elles pourraient inspirer de possibles agrandissements
ou embellissements architecturaux à venir (cf. The 'Suggestiveness' of Roman Architecture : Henry Cole and Pietro Dovizielli's
Photographic Survey of 1859).
In 1855, the Italian photographer Pietro Dovizielli became known for the work he presented in exhibitions in
Paris, London and Glasgow. Four years later, he was commissioned by Henry Cole, the Director of the new Victoria
and Albert Museum, to create an album of Roman monuments for the V&A library. Originally intended as study
prints, his work now represents 44 of the finest photographic views made of the Eternal City.
