carte, strappetto con perdita parziale di una lettera alla carta e5. Legatura in carta spruzzata rimontata con titolo
manoscritto entro cartiglio non coevo applicato al dorso. Tagli spruzzati di rosso. Buon esemplare.

In-folio (mm 318x188). Pagine [2], [1-4]-218, [4]. In
antiporta una tavola in xilografia di Peter Barker Mill e una
carta geografica ripiegata fuori testo. Fregio al frontespizio
e numerose decorazioni nel testo anche a piena pagina in
xilografia. Bell’esemplare, ad ampi margini. Legatura coeva in
pelle con decorazione in oro impressa al piatto anteriore, titolo
in oro impresso al dorso, filetti dorati alle unghiature e taglio
testa dorato. Entro custodia in tela blu. Esemplare numero 19
su una tiratura a 35 copie numerate, uno dei 50 con legatura

Primaedizione in inglese. Sparrman si unì a JamesCooknel suo secondo
viaggio con la
Resolution
come assistente di Johann e Georg Forster (vedi
lotto 483) «supplementing by his botanical knowledge the zoological
knowledge of the Forsters [...], a father and son who where naturalist on
the voyage» (Blunt 198). Come si legge all’inizio del secondo capitolo,
a pagina 22: «At four o’clock in the afternoon of the 22nd of November the anchor was weighed for a voyage which was not only
perhaps the most hazardous and fraught with dangers, but undoubtedly the most fortunate that history can even relate», un viaggio
che ampliò enormemente i confini della Terra allora conosciuta. Sparrman fu, fra le altre cose, uno dei primi a contemplare quel
maestoso spettacolo della Natura che sono gli iceberg nel dicembre del 1722, subito dopo la partenza alla volta dell’Antartico.

In-4° (mm 200x162). Pagine [12], 233, [3]. Fregio tipografico xilografico al frontespizio. Minime bruniture ma buon
esemplare. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena, restauri al dorso. Note manoscritte coeve lungo il testo; al contropiatto
anteriore applicata etichetta della Casa Editrice Luce e Ombra.
Prima edizione, seconda rara tiratura con la correzione del numero alla pagina 104, di questa importante opera che inaugura
un genere politico-filosofico riunendo il razionalismo cartesiano con la tradizione religiosa ebraica.
