Born in chicago in 1916 and raised by immigrant parents in modest circumstances, Sam
Berkman earned a Ph.d in bacteriology from the university of chicago in 1942. After serving
in the u.S. Army in the Pacific during WW II, he and his wife, roslyn, moved to los Angeles in
1948. It was in l.A. that Sam founded BioScience laboratories, which grew to become the world’s
largest clinical reference laboratory. trained as a scientist, Sam excelled as an entrepreneur and
businessman. A tough and unsentimental negotiator, Sam was known to everyone as the most
loving of family men and loyal of friends.
Sam was a generous and committed supporter of higher education. He endowed scholarships
at the university of chicago and uclA that have supported dozens of students.
A resident of Beverly Hills for more than 50 years, Sam became interested in collecting

century illustrated books in the early 1970s. What began as a hobby quickly became an
obsession. Sam assembled the bulk of his collection between 1970 and 1975, purchasing from
dealers and auction houses primarily in France and the united States.
Sam died in January 2012. roslyn, his wife of 68 years, passed away in November.
