Description
enluminées et non enluminées représentant au naturel ce qui se trouve de plus intéressant et de plus curieux parmi les animaux, les végétaux et les minéraux, pour servir d’intelligence à l’histoire générale des trois règnes de la nature. Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Lacombe, M.M. Rey, 1775 - 1781, 2 vol., large folio, 19th c. (?) half calf (joints starting to split at heads), flat spines with older labels pasted on, 200 pl. (some onubtrusive marg. dampstaining). Very nice set. Cfr. Ill. Original ed. of this fascinating work by the French botanist P.J. Buc’hoz (), showing the beauties of nature on large engravings in double suites, one delicately and expertly coloured for aesthetic effects, one uncoloured in extremely detailed black and white for scientific use. The work was published over a period of 6 years. 200 pl. each in hand-coloured and plain states, for a total of 400 pls divided into 20 decades, 20 engr. titles, by Miss Niquette, in red, yellow, blue or black, 20 engr. lists of pl., some pls on blue tinted sheets. Many plates were designed after de Favanne and desmoulins, and engraved by Fessard, Baquoy, Mesnel and others. the parts devoted to the animal kingdom include a large number of splendid bird plates (decades 1, 4, 7 and 10 of each ‘centurie’). Some botanical plates were designed after a Chinese painted manuscript from the Imperial Library.
