DUBOIS, Nicolaus - Dictata physicalia minus principalia. Louvain (Paedagogium Porcense), Cornelius van Wijckersloot, 1653, Latin manuscript on 4to-size paper, c. 20 x 15,5 cm, writing area c. 15,5 x 12 cm, with 27 ll. of text, skilfully written in brown ink, 4 blank ff. (numbered I-IV)-495-[1] pp. (blank ff. V-VIII between pp. 252-253, f. IX between pp. 422-423) + 3 blank ff. (X-XII) + 233-[1] pp. + 6 blank ff. (XIII-XIV, J, XV-XVII (mod. pencil foliation/pagination). Cont. blindstamped ivory vellum (part of lower cover gone), rebacked with white vellum, spine on 4 raised bands, cloth ties (2 sm. pcs of blank margin torn off, 1 ill. with marg. dampstain). In excellent condition. Cfr. ill. extensive courses on aristotelian physics, given in the Pig college (“Paedagogium Porcense”), one of the 4 colleges of the Louvain Arts Faculty. Expertly written by (for?) the Utrecht born student Cornelius van Wijckersloot (1634-1682), who was in 1672 assigned to the Court of Utrecht by Louis XIV. This very early specimen of Louvain Arts courses is remarkable for the Baroque illustrations and rich calligraphy: 2 engr. titles, 8 engr. part titles (flower garlands), 1 engr. plate, and 22 very large (i.a. 15 full-page) pen-drawn calligraphic initials, 12 pen drawings (i.a. 5 full-page) in the text, 1 coat-of-arms, and 1 large tailpiece. they show lions, foxes, pheasants, snakes, peacocks, centaurs, putti, dragons, mermaids, elephants, soldiers, young lovers, astronomical instruments, castles, mills and much more, as well as some landscape scenes.
