(some marg. repaired tears, 1 pl. with repaired lack on paper not touching the picture, some pl. faintly fox.). Fresh and very well bound copy. Cfr. ill. Rare lithographic atlas (without the introd. by Ph. Lesbroussart et Barbié du Boccage and 3 text vol. publ. by Wahlen) containing 1 ill. titlep., 1 large folding map of greece including the coasts of turkey and 142 pl. (94, 48) executed by Lauters, Lemonnier, Peetermans, Delpierre, Senefelder e.a. after 2 former travel books: “Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce” by Choiseul-Gouffier (1782) and “Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore” by Melling (1807 or 1819). Greece: 94 pl. totaling 141 ill. (num. 1-100, the others ill. not numb.), with caption in lower part, most with mention “Voy. de la Grèce” in upper left corner. Picturesque views, often animated, of sites or cities (Milo, Naxia, Antiparos, Scio, Samos, Cos, Rhodes, Milet, Smyrne…, ruins, temples…, a caravanserail) or costumes of natives. Choiseul-Gouffier (1752- 1817) was a member of the Académie française, French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 until the fall of the French monarchy and a scholar of ancient greece. Turkey: portrait of selim iii and 47 not numb. full pl. with captions in lower part, most with mention “voy. de constantinople” in upper left corner. views of the Bosphorus, scutari, constantinople (many), Buyuk-Déré, Tarapia…, “Palais de la sultane Hadidgé”, “Marche solemnelle du Grand- Seigneur”, “Intérieur d’un café public” and some views of the serail. Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831) was a painter, architect and voyager who is counted among the “Levantine Artists”. He is famous for his vedute of constantinople, a town where he lived for 18 years. He was imperial architect to sultan selim iii and Hatice sultan. Ref. Opac kBr. not in attabey.
