Third edition of this apologetics of the catholic religion (1st ed. : 1543) by Vives (Valence
1492-1540 Bruges), a Spanish Jew turned into catholic. Theologian and philosopher, he
was considered as one of the most oustanding humanists of his time and was patronised
by Guillaume de Croij and Carolus V. During his charge as professor of theology at the
University of Leuven, he was in contact with Erasmus who asked him to prepare a critical
edition of Saint Augustine’s City of God.
