double pages including the general title, 86 full-pages
with elaborate frames, many historiated borders and
tail-pieces, all in black. Complete of the 5 facsimile
(title pages of the editions of 1590, 1596, 1609 and
1611 and the woodcut «St George and the Dragon»)
and of the salmon wrappers of some issues (part I,
IV,VII, X, XIII, XVI). One of thousand copies printed on
handmade paper of this epic and allegorical poem, the
longest in English, written in «Spensarian stanza» and
the most elaborate work of Crane as book illustrator.
It celebrates the Tudors dynasty by making the con-
nexion between them and Arthur and recieved much
favors from Elizabeth I. The queen herself appears un-
der different allegories : Gloriana, Faerie queene and
Belphoebe. Printer’s mark at the end of the volumes
and press’ mark at the end of volume I and V.
