Édition juxtalinéaire grec-latin (éd. orig. : Bâle, 1550), donnée e.a. par l’abbé Jacques de
Billy (1535-1581), des 53 discours ou sermons, des 232 lettres et des 155 poèmes de
Grégoire de Nazianze (329-390), Docteur de l’Église cappadocien et hiérarque (avec Basile
de Césarée et Jean Chrysostome), considéré comme Père l’Église, nommé contre son gré
premier évêque de la ville de Sasime par Eusèbe de Césarée (329-379). Grégoire fut par la
suite imposé au poste d’évêque de Constantinople par Théodose le Grand, ce qui l’amena
à présider le Concile de Constantinople en 381, auquel participa e.a. Grégoire de Nysse.
Il en démissionnera peu de temps après le début suite à diverses dissensions. Exemplaire

given in Greek with his commentaries by David Hoeschel (1556-1617),
German librarian, editor and scholar. Famous answer to Celsius’ attacks against the early
Christianim contained in his «True Doctrine» (178). Preceded by the biography of the
author extracted from the Souda and followed by his «panegyricus» written by his student
in Caesarea, Gregory Thaumaturgus (214-270), bishop of Neocaesarea and interpreted by
the German poet Lorenz Rhodomann (1546-1606) with notes of Hoeschel and Casaubon.
Origen, from Alexandria (184/184-253/254), considered by Erasmus as the most important
theologian, lead an ascetic life and and was a defensor of the apocatastasis or universal
salvation.
