Probably the 1st vol. of "De nieuwe groote ligtende zeefakkel" with 47 charts of the British Islands. We were
unable to identify this copy with the copies described in Koeman "Maritime atlases". Johannes Van Keulen
(1654-1715) was a 17th c. cartographer and specialised in sea maps and sea atlases. Gerard van Keulen
(1678-1726) continued the work of his father Johannes and produced new editions of various volumes of the
influential nautical atlas : "Zee-Atlas" and the pilot guide "Zee-Fakkel" (meaning Sea-Torch in English). Our
copy contains :
53 charts
of which 8 folding, 38 double-paged and 7 single-paged. Besides the
47 English
charts mentioned in the register
on verso of the dedication leaf are present
6 (extra ?) sea maps concerning
the Low Countries
: "Zuyder-Zee", [Texel], "Texel en 't Vlie", the coasts of Hollandt, Zeeland and "Zeeuse
Vlaemsche en Engelsekusten". Libr. stamps and tickets.
