Bossuet. Interesting work giving a lot of details on the customs of the Portuguese Indies, trade, religion,
fauna & flora, ethnographic descriptions of the Madagascans, their diseases (pp. 281-319 incl. a treatise on
tropical medicine), etc.

(1st vol. of his ms. printed in 1686; 4to ed. in 3 vol. also publ. in 1711) of this famous
travel account by the French Huguenot Chardin (1643-1713). He was the son of a jeweller and went to the
Levant to purchase gem stones in 1665 and set out again in 1671. "Vol. 1-3 contain the journey to Ispahan,
vol. 4 contains a general history of Persia, vols 5-10 contain accounts of Persian literature, history, religion
and political life" (Atabey).
