Fascinating album amicorum of a member of the Calvinist intelligentsia of the Dutch Republic, testifying of
its international network. Nicolaas van Sorgen (Delft 1582-1639) was a lawyer and supporter of the
Remonstrant party in the Dutch Reformed Church. He was a friend of Hugo Grotius and Johannes
Wtenbogaert. His album, kept with him on his Grand Tour through France, Switzerland and Germany
(October 1604 - September 1605), contains some
68 inscriptions
, most of them in Latin (some in French) by
fellow students or professors (on 221r-224r an old "Index nominum in hoc Albo scriptorum"). It opens (1r)
with his own name and device in Latin and German: 'Nicolaas van Sorgen | Amat Victoria | Curam |
Sorgfeltigkeit liebet | den Seig"; on 4r are his coat-of-arms and device with the date 1604. From 21 Oct.
1604 until 7 March 1605 he was in
Orléans
, with a few trips to
Paris
(17 Nov., 19-24 Dec. 1604),
Blois
(9-12
Jan. 1605) and
Saumur
(15-18 Jan. 1605). On 11-12 March 1605 he travelled to
Saumur
,
La Rochelle
(16
April), and then to other Calvinist strongholds in the South (
Montauban
5 May,
Montpellier
28 May,
Nîmes
3-6 June). On 2 July he was in Orléans again, but soon left for
Geneva
, where he stayed 7-22 July (with trips
to
Basel
, 14, and
Bern
, 16). On July 24 he was in
Lyon
, on July 28 in
Strassburg
, and then he moved to
Heidelberg
, where he stayed from 21 Aug. till 15 Sept. The last place mentioned is
Frankfurt
(25 Sept.).
During his Grand Tour he met some of the leaders of the Calvinist Church and intelligentsia :
Ph. du
Mornay Plessis
(Saumur 15 I 1605),
Is. Casaubon
(Paris 17 XII 1604),
Th.
Beza
(Geneva 7 VII 1605),
J.
Gruterus
(Heidelberg 5 IX 1605),
P. du Moulin
(Paris 17 XI 1604). Among his fellow students was
Samuel
Naeranus
(Saumur 17 I 1605). Giltstamped on front cover "Nicolaus van Sorgen" and "Anno 1604"; on
lower cover "Amat Victoria Curam" (his motto) and "Anno 1604".
