intended to be a sequel to the "Schilder-Boek" van Van Mander, by the Dutch art writer, painter,
draughtsman and engraver A. Houbraken (1660-1719). Complete with
48 fine plates engraved by Jacob

, Arnold's son (1698-1780) and some by Dirk Jonkman : front., engr. dedication (2nd vol.),
frontisp.-portrait and 45 pl., mostly portraits of artists, - and 4 small engravings (2 title-vign., coat-of-arms

Brussels ed. of this famous detailed catalogue, 1st publ. Basel 1778. "One of the earliest modern catalogues,
'La galerie électorale de Dusseldorff' (1778) played a significant role in the history of museums and helped
mark the transition from the Baroque to the Enlightenment. Constructed by Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm
II von der Pfalz between 1709 and 1714, the Düsseldorf gallery is an early example of exhibiting an art
collection in a nonresidential structure. It charted the course toward what would eventually become the
institution of the public museum" (Getty Center). Name on title. Old name on front flyleaf.
