, sans l'année 1858, 5e & 6e années (1837, 1838) de l'édition belge; chaque t. avec titre et
table. Célèbre revue à but éducatif dirigée par l'ex saint-simonien E. Charton (1807-1890) sur le modèle du
"Penny Magazine" britannique, remarquable par la tenue de ses articles (G. Sand et C. Flammarion y
contribuèrent) et par son abondante et pittoresque iconographie gravée sur bois. La revue qui connut un très
grand succès contribua à diffuser les connaissances scientifiques (elle contient en 1839 le
1er article illustré
sur la photographie
qui venait d'être inventée par Daguerre mais aussi des articles sur les chemins de fer,
l'astronomie, l'archéologie égyptienne...), cert. réalités sociales de l'époque (travail des enfants dans les
mines en Angleterre) et les arts (avec de nombr. reprod. d'oeuvres anciennes ou modernes). E. Charton est
également
le
fondateur
de
"L'Illustration"
et
du
"Tour
du
monde".
