[Book devil] - Tytinillus

copy with strong impression.

The upper half shows a devil dressed as a pedlar with a crutch, carrying a load of books, and in the
background 2 churches (German type). The lower half consists of 16 ll. of Latin text (Inc. "Canonicas Horas,
si devote legis, oras"), urging the viewer/reader to meditate God's words and not to let the devil take over
one's speech and twist it. Tytinillus (or rather Titivillus) has been described as collecting idle chat that
occurs during church service, and mispronounced, mumbled or skipped words of the service, to take to Hell
to be counted against the offenders. He is also called the "patron demon of scribes" (and later of printers !)
causing them to write (or print) gross errors.
