Nadar, Le Verrier et Hetzel

Felix Tournachon, dit « Nadar » (1820-1910) est une figure. Enfant pro-

dige du XIX

siècle, homme-orchestre, artiste fantaisiste et bohème des

techniques nouvelles, caricaturiste, aérostier et photographe recherché des

célébrités du temps, il fonde en juillet 1863 la « Société d’Encouragement

pour la Locomotion Aérienne au moyen d’appareils plus lourds que l’air »

avec Gabriel de la Landelle et Ponton d’Amécourt, auxquels se joindront

l’académicien Babinet, les frères Barral et le baron Taylor. Jules Verne en

sera nommé le censeur. Ami commun de l’écrivain et de l’éditeur Hetzel,

qu’il connaît depuis 1848, il est très probable que c’est Nadar qui eut l’idée

d’un roman bâti sur un voyage dans les airs (Cinq semaines en ballon).

« Le Géant », monumental aérostat sphérique de 6000 m

, est construit sous

sa direction la même année. Nadar inspirera Jules Verne lorsqu’il créera le

personnage pétulant de Michel Ardan (anagramme de Nadar), le passa-

ger-surprise de l’obus vedette de ses deux romans « De la terre à la lune »

et « autour de la lune ».

Nadar, LeVerrier and Hetzel

Felix Tournachon, also known as “Nadar” (1820-1910) is somewhat of a charac-

ter. A nineteenth century child prodigy, one-man orchestra, fanciful artist as well

as a new techniques’ bohemian, caricaturist, balloonist and a celebrated photo-

grapher of the time. In July 1863, with Gabriel de la Landelle, Ponton d’Amécourt,

the Academician Babinet, the Barral brothers and the Baron Taylor, he founded the

“Société d’Encouragement pour la Locomotion Aérienne au moyen d’appareils plus

lourds que l’air”(the Society for the Encouragement of Air Locomotion by means

of Heavier-than-air Machines), of which Jules Verne was the secretary. Nadar was

friends with both the writer and Hetzel the publisher, whom he had known since

1848 and it is very likely that it was Nadar who suggested a novel about a journey

through the air (Five weeks in a balloon). That same year, he commissioned the

construction of “Le Géant”, a monumental spherical aerostat of 6000 m3. Nadar

also inspired Jules Verne when he created the petulant character of Michel Ardan

(Nadar’s anagram), the projectile’s surprise passenger in the two novels “From the

Earth to the Moon” and “Around the Moon.”
