First edition
of those letters to the English lawyer Daines Barrington and Captain Blankett,
observations on the Nile, the climat and seasons, the Mamelucks justice, commercial
advantages of Egypt situation and reflexions on clouds and rain. Illustrated with a map after
Jean-Baptiste d'Anville. Antes (1740-1811) was the first American Morovian missionary to
travel and work in Egypt where he stayed 12 years and served to the Coptic Church of
Grand Cairo. In 1779 he was captured and tortured by some Osman Bey's followers and
spent his last two years in Egypt recovering from that incident. He is also one of the earliest
American-born chamber music composers.
