of the reunion of these 2 scholarly works, the most famous of
Isidorus and Capella, given by Bonaventura Vulcanius or Bonaventura De Smet from
Bruges (1538-1614), translator and professor in Latin and Greek at Leiden University.
(1) The «Originum libri viginti » or «Etymologiarum libri vinginti », divided in 424 chapters
(grammar, men, family, zoology, cosmograpy, geography, languages, books, medicine,
agriculture, music…), considered as the ¿UVW (QF\FORSHG\, tries to englobe the all
ancient knowledge and to transmit the Classic culture. The chapter devoted to the family
relationships is illustrated with 3 schemas (2 full-pages and 1 in texto). Isidorus (560/570-
601/636), bishop of Sevilla, was canonised in 1522 and became Doctor of the Church in
1722. (2) «De nuptiis Philologiae & Mercurii » by the author from the 5
th
Cent. Capella is
also a compendium of knowledges (dialectic -with a schema in texto of the «Square of
dialectic»-, philology, rhetoric, astronomy…) through a mythological story of the mariage
between Mercury and Philology. Copy illustrated with a large printer’s mark on title-page
and ornemental initial letters.
