of this very interesting collection of works as Beda (672/673-735),English
monk, author and Doctor of the Church treated many subjets in many aeras : grammar,
spelling, arithmetics, astrology, astronomy, music, natural history, martyrology, intrepetations
of biblical Hebrew and Greek names, commentaries (on Leviticus, Deuteronomy, parabale
of Solomon, Book of Numbers, Gospels, Epistles of Saint Paul…), sins remedy, etc. The
arithmetics, astrology and astronomy treaties (parts I and II) contain tables (of Pythagorus
and multiplication), calendars (with feast days and martrys, lunar cycle, ephemeris -2 with
caracters in red and black…) and lists (Roman emperors, pontiffs since Eusebius…), etc.
Our copy is also illustrated with decorated or historiated initials letters, several diagrams

amoris divini »…) by saint Bernard and 47 other sermons given by Gilbert of Hoyland (12

Cent.), abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Swineshead, who was in charge to continue
the incomplete serie of 86 sermons on the «Song of Songs». Bernard (1090/1091-1153),
abbot of Clairvaux, adds to the cistercian austerity of the poverty and the manual work, the
contempt of the culture and any entertaining activy. He preached for the Second Crusad
(1145-1149) and transposed it into a Saint War against the Cathars. He was made Saint
