"secondary deluxe" medium (instead of vellum) was introduced into Hebrew printing by a Christian
publisher of Jewish texts, Daniel Bomberg of Antwerp. The new material was blue paper, a product of
Renaissance fascination with indigo dye, which became a convention of Hebrew deluxe printing in Venice
and later in other northern Italian towns in the sixteenth century… It is a curious aspect of the competition
between Gershom Soncino and Bomberg that the former never produced a book on blue paper; perhaps it
was too costly, or simply unavailable because of an Aldine or Venetian monopoly." (Bibl. Rosenthaliana).
