Unrecorded (?) ed. of one of the texts in the satirical compilation "Epistolae obscurorum virorum". The
present ed. is not identical with those described by VD-16 (O-852: Mainz, Schöffer, 1518, and ZV 11994:
Leipzig, Stöckel, 1518). Crotus Rubeanus (1480-after 1537) was a humanist and a Reformer, who later
returned to the Old Church. Luther then called him "des Cardinals zu Mentz Tellerlecker, Dotter Kroete
genant". "Die Oratio funebris ist wie die Epistolae obscurorum virorum eine mimetische Satire (…) in
bewährter Dunkelmänner-Polemik gegen das humanistische Stilideal (…). Der Nachruf auf Johannes Cerdo
erweist ihn ebenmals als Vir obscurus wie die Qualität der auf ihm zurückgeführten Quaestiones (…)"
(Deutsche Lit. des Mittelalters. Verfasserlexikon, I:507-508).
Half-page woodcut ill.

title.

of a treatise on the power of the Holy Roman Emperor, compiled by J. Anthonisz. van Middelburg
(d. 1510), doctor of canon law, vicar-general to Hendrik van Bergen (Bishop of Cambrai), and a friend of
Erasmus. It is written against the views of the Italian humanist L. Bruni (1370-1444), who claimed that a

Erasmus contributed a letter
(Allen 173)
and 2 Latin poems
(ASD I-7 nrs. 29 and 62). These are among his earliest published writings.
