Eigentijdse band

: kalfsleder over eikenhouten borden, platten met blinde versiering van lijnenkaders en

rolstempels, rug met ribben, restanten van messing sloten (lacunes in het leder van de platten, schutbladen

vernieuwd).

Eerste uitgave

van de "Leuvense Bijbel" zijnde de Vulgaat-vertaling bezorgd door Nicolas

van Winghe (1495-1552), kanunnik van St. Maartensdal te Leuven, ter vervanging van

de Liesveldt- en de Vorstermanbijbel. De c. 100 tekstfiguren zijn dezelfde als deze van

de Vorstermanbijbel uit 1542. Verzorgde typografie op 2 kolommen met enkele versierde

initialen.

¶ Édition originale de la traduction de la Vulgate par Nicolas van Winghe, chanoine de Val-Saint-Martin

à Louvain; illustrée de nombreux bois (manque titre et 5 autres ff. lim. au début ainsi que le dernier f.

blanc). Plein veau sur ais de bois de l'époque (pet. lacunes de cuir).

In-f° (text n.c. but incomplete of 9 preliminary lvs -incl. the engr. title-page and the Annunciation engraving-,

and from p. 201 -cfr collation by Imhof-, several pages or parts of text replaced by hand, lf. Ffff3 bound in the

beginning instead of the end, dampstains throughout -some large-, stains and sometimes mold, margins and

tears repaired, some tears without lack not restored, some pp. soiled, cancel on CXLII).

Contemporary binding

: calf on wooden boards, sides with brass bosses and clasps and decorated with blind

roll-stamps, ribbed spine (small lacks of leather, joints split on about 2 and 5 cm, rare small wears, good

condition).

Massive graduale (47 x 28 x 14 cm) printed in large types in black and red, preceeded by

the calendar, agremented with musical scores and illustrated with ornemental black or black

and red initials. Two of them at pp. 1 and 671 are signed with the monogram "PB" for Pieter

van der Borcht.

of leather at the spine, some small wears, corners very dulled).

Rare second posthumous edition of the translation

by Sigismundus Gelenius of the

religious and philosophical works by the early Christian apologist, saint Justin (100 ?-165 ?).

He is regarded as the foremost interpreter of the theory of the Logos and was martyred,

along with some of his students, because he refused the cult of images. Gelenius already

published an edition in 1555 at Basel. Printer's mark on the title-page, ornemental head-

and tail-pieces and initials.

Most important dogmatic textbook of its era prevailed from the 13

Century,

commented by Jean Aleaume, Parisian professor in theology. Used by many theologians

like Thomas of Aquin as a fundament to elaborate their own ideas. It made the bishop of

Paris Peter Lombardus (1100-1160) so famous that he was given the surname "Magister

Sententarium" and still today often considered as one of the precursors of the Thomists.

The first edition was published in 1537 (?).
