[HOLBEIN, Hans (1497-1543].- Imagines mortis. His
accesserunt epigrammata, è gallico idiomata à Georgio Aemilyio in latinum
translata. Ad haec, medicina animae, tam ijs, qui firma, quàm qui adversa corporis
valetudine praediti sunt, maximè necessaria. Quae his addita sunt, sequens
pagina demonstrabit.

Conremporary binding over wooden boards : calf, boards with
2 different blindstamped panels figuring biblical scenes within frames
of lines and floral roll-stamps with portrait medaillons (decorated
spine and brass clasps renewed, small professional restorations at
the lower edges of the boards).

Sixth Cologne-edition (princeps : 1555) of the "Dance of
Death" with 55 fine woodcuts by Antonius Sylvius (c. 1555-
1599; his monogramme on B2 and B3) based on the original
Lyonese series after Hans Holbein the Younger. Each wood-
block with a Biblical caption and an emblematic 4-line the-
matic commentary by Georgius Aemilius. The second part
contains the moral treatise "Medicinae animae", prayers,
reflexions and sermons on death by Cyprian of Carthage,
Caspar Huberinus, Urbanus Rhegius and John Chrysostom.
