La lettre est écrite par Philip Slaughter : “the sentiments of gratitude for
your Magnificent Sacrifice in behalf of their now happy and prosperous
country. We having served with you in the American Revolutionary
Army take great pleasure in performing this duty” et ils l’invitent
à Culpeper “at a dinner to be given (...) any day that may be most
convenient for you”
Gabriel Long (1751-1827), a native of Culpeper, was an ardent
patriot. He was renowned as one of the best riflemen in Virginia.
Long went to join Washington’s army besieging Boston.
Long’s fame began to grow at about this time in early 1776. He
became good friends with George Washington and Marquis
de Lafayette and was often sent out on detached services as
an independent commander. Philip Slaughter (1758-1849) was
a Captain in the Continental army. He was a son of Colonel
Slaughter, another member of the Continental army, and was
made lieutenant in the company of Captain Long. Lt. Slaughter
was promoted to a captaincy in 1778, and served during the
war, being in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown.
