Rhenanus (1485-1547). Early postincunabula of the commentaries on the Bible (Genesis,
Books of Numbers, Ezechiel, Exodus…), the dogmatical works : «De principiis» (one

depravatione librorum, praecipue Origenis» (or «De adulteraione» on forgeries of writings
during Origen’s lifetime) and the famous polemical work «Contra Celsum libri » (answer to
Celius’ attacks against Christianism contained in his «True Doctrine» of 178). Origen, from
Alexandria (184/184-253/254), considered by Erasmus as the most important theologian,
lead an ascetic life and and was a defensor of the apocatastasis or universal salvation.
Gregorius Nazianzus, Eusebius of Caesarea (who published together an anthology of
Origen’s works, «Origen’s Philocalia») and Gregorius Nyssenus resumed the same idea.
