Musica Transalpina est une collection de madrigaux publiés en Angleterre en 1588. Les
madrigaux avaient traversé les Alpes dans le sens que la forme madrigal a été emprunté aux
Italiens, et les pièces étaient principalement par les Italiens. Il est significatif pour marquer le
début de l'âge d'or du madrigal en Angleterre.
Musica transalpina contient 57 pièces séparées par 18 compositeurs, avec Alfonso Ferrabosco
l'aîné ayant le plus, et Luca Marenzio secondes plus. Ferrabosco avait vécu en Angleterre dans
les années 1560 et 1570, ce qui pourrait expliquer le grand nombre de ses compositions dans le
livre; il était relativement inconnu en Italie.
Soit 12 vol. petit in-4 ; maroquin vert à la Du Seuil, médaillon central titre sur les plats. Dos à
nerfs orné defleurons dorés.Filet sur les coupes. Tranches dorées. Encadreme,t intérieur même
maroquin. [Bedford].
La réunion des 12 volumes est d’une insigne rareté. Bel exemplaire en reliure uniforme
finement exécutée.
Exemplaire un peu court de marge.

Thomas Morley was a celebrated composer in his own right and emphasises "Practicall Musicke" rather
than abstruse theory. When the pupil is confronted with a complicated scientific table by Gafurius, he
protests, "Heere is a Table in deede contayning more than I ever meane to beate my brayns about. As for
musick, the principal thing we seek in it, is to delight the eare. . .therefore proceede to the rest of your
musicke" (F2). The book results from Morley's own extensive research, and includes quotations from works
by Striggio, Renaldi, Piggot, and others, in addition to his own examples.
The music at the end of the
volume is printed in "table format"; ie the parts are appropriately orientated for the singers sat round a
table
