Third edition of the translation from the Greek by the scholar Sigmund Gelen (1

ed. of the

transl. : 1554) of this collection of biblical commentaries by Philo of Alexandria (c. 25 BC-

c. 45), a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher. With the "De mortuorum resurrectione" commonly

attributed to the Father of the Church Athenagoras (c. 133-c. 190), first complete exposition

of the doctrine in Christian literature, and with the "De immortalitate animarum, et corporum

resurrectione" of Aeneas of Gaza (+ c. 1518), Neo-Platonic philosopher. Text decorated

with ornemental initials and the marks of Episcopius on the title-pages and on the back of

last leaves.

Rare post-incunabulum

of this "small sum" of popes decrees and decretales on various

subjects : eucharisty, altar breads, obligation for priests to help poor people, clerical celibacy,

abortions, homicides, women contaminated with leprosy, simony, curses, bigamy, etc. The

Spanish Dominican friar Raimondo de Peñafort (c. 1175-1275) compiled the Decretales of

Gregory IX, collection that remained a major part of Church law until the 20

th

century. He is

the patron of the (canon) lawyers. Text decorated with some large black initials. The first

edition was published in 1504 in Strasbourg.

ed. : 1503) edited by the poet Bernardino

Dardano (1472-1535) and dealing with idolatry, charity, youthness, etc. Text in gothic types

decorated with dotted initials heightened and with ornaments in red ink in the table. Device

of Jean Barbier on the back of last leaf. The Dominican Vivaldi (+ 1540), professor of

theology was the counsellor of the marquesses of Saluzzo.

theologian, intended to educate morally the young people at a time where the Church crisis

lead to a bad education. Supported by texts or quotes of a.o. Ciceron, Platon, Eusebius,

Lactantius, Petrarca and Aenas Silvius (i.e. Pius II) and followed by 20 laws to be well-

established in morals.
