Attractive painting showing an impressive mountaineous landscape. Under a tree, a person is
reading inside a house, attentively watched by a crane standing on the lakeside.
According to experts working on ancient Chinese history and language, the painting is made
after
Dong Wengong
(1740-1818), a famous artist and official in Quing Dynasty, by
Ji Xiang Guan
Zhu Ren
as shown in one of the seals on the scroll. Above the characters “Dong Wengong” is
written “Ni”, which means “to follow” or “to imitate”. The only “Ji Xiang Guan Zhu” found in
the reference books of the Quing Dynasty is Li Mulong, a painter living in Wujiang, quite close
to Shanghai. The only resource mentioning his name is a supplement to a dictionary recording
painters who are active between 1851-1861. Moreover, Li Mulong was a pupil of Liu Zihe (1806-
1875). So, if Li was the author of this scroll, the most probable date seems to be 1868.
