f. bl. Rappelons que le 16/9/1862 avait eu lieu le fameux banquet Victor Hugo organisé par les
éditeurs Lacroix et Verboeckhoven pour fêter le succès des “Misérables”. Nadar faisait partie des
80 invités et les frères Ghémar exécutèrent un portrait photographique de chacun des convives. En
1862, l’atelier des frères Ghémar se situait en réalité rue de l’Ecuyer. Peut-être un dernier écho de
la fête?

One of 9 photogr. featuring Einstein, made in Pasadena, California in 1932 by Anton Schaller
(Munich 1900- Pasadena 1974), German-born pioneer of color photography and early motion-
picture, who immigrated to the US in 1923 and never returned to Europe. There were taken with
a Leica 35 mm during a visit of Einstein to the California Institute of Technology. Schaller has
left following anecdotal material: “As I walked through the grounds of CalTech, I spotted almost
immediately the flowing mane of Einstein’s white hair and so I approached him and introduced
myself. I was much the younger man than he was and I noticed right away the smile-like penetration
of his eyes. As I started clicking, I noticed a group of ladies standing around and one of them said
in a very audible voice “You know, Einstein does not understand a word of English” and again
Einstein’s eyes got hold of me and with a big grin he said “Diese Leute bilden sich ein, dass ich ein
Dummkopf bin”. Einstein liked the shots because none of them were artificially posed and therefore
looked very natural.
