especially for French fifteenth- and sixteenth-century books. It describes the unrivaled collection

which, during his short life Baron James de Rothschild had built up with almost unlimited means at

his disposal. Picot’s detailed and erudite catalogue is exemplary. It also includes many important

seventeenth-century books and some outstanding examples of the following century. It was

bequeathed to the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris” (Breslauer & Folter 135).
