Alphonse, conservateur au Musée royal d'histoire naturelle de Bruxelles, seul auteur du

tome III.

lvs facing the plates, some margins of plates slightly cut off, dampstains in vol. I and large in the beginning, big

tear without lack in plate 23 of the same vol. partly reinforced).

Century binding: veined calf, gilt decorated flat spines, red sprinkled edges (large dampstains, two joints

partly split, small lack at the upper turn in of vol. I, small parts rubbed, some scratches, flyleaves renewed).

First edition

of the 4 first volumes illustrated with an engraved title and 146 plates by

Frederick Polydore Nodder nicely hand-coloured. Those figure birds, snakes, insects,

plants, corals, etc., and are accompanied with descriptive texts in Latin and English giving

the generic and specific characters and informations about the habitats and sometimes

on their habits. The English botanist and zoologist Shaw (1751-1813) was a medical

practitioner before being named assistant lecturer in botany at Oxford University. He twas

the co-founder of the Linnean Society of London in 1788 and became assistant keeper of

the Natural history department at the British Museum. The complete set of this work was

published from 1789 till 1813.
