First edition of the translation
of the complete Bible by the reformer Cassiodoro de Reina,
based on the original Hebrew and Greek texts, known as "Biblia del Oso" or "Bible of the
bear" because of the vignette on title-page figuring a bear trying to obtain honey from a hole
in a trunk tree. Published at Basel by Thomas Guarini even though the device on title-page
is from Samuel Apiarius who was also printing in the city at that time. According Darlow &
Moule, Apiarius probably printed the book for Guarini, maybe in his own office. Illustrated
with 2 woodcuts figuring Ezekiel's vision of the Chariot of the Lord and his prophecy of
Tyre's destruction and ornemental initials (one representing cherubs). Title-page in variant
B, i.e. without the narrow ornament at the top and with the title arranged in six lines. The
Reformer Reina (c. 1520-1594) escaped from Spain in c. 1557 and came to England after
the accession of Elizabeth I. He settled in London where he preached to a congreation
of Spaniards. Because of accusations of heresy and crime, which he cleared himself
afterwards, he had to return to the continent. He held for a time a ministry in Antwerp and
was associated with authors of the Polyglot Bible. The Inquisitation placed his works in the
Index and burnt symbolically an image of Reina.

prophétie d'Ézéchiel) et d'1 vign. de titre. Pleine basane de l'ép. (mouill. dont certaines larges, marge inf.
du titre restaurée, rouss., épidermures et griffes).
