Small in-8° : [12]-400 lvs (small marginal tears in the beginning, those of 2 first lvs repaired -with lack of

publishing place and date on title-page-, small foxing mostly in the margins, light dampstains, stamps in

2 margins).

Contemporary binding : brown morocco, boards with gilt double fillets and roll-stamps, with angular fleurons

in the inner frame, flat spine with same frames encircling "Thucydide" in the center, gilt edges (nice condition,

2 small wormholes, slightly trimmed).

Second edition of the translation by Francesco Strozzi of the "History of the Peloponnesian

War" (1

ed. of the transl. : 1545). Text printed in italics illustrated with historiated initials and

2 identical devices on title-page and larger on the verso of last leaf figuring Laocoon and his

children being suffocated by the snake. A Laocoon vignette was used by Valerio and Luigi

Dorico in 1539 and 1544 but the composition is different from ours.

Estienne, private tutor of de Baïf's son Jean Antoine. With an index in Latin and French.
