Latin trsl. by H. Parry (1561-1616) of “Summe of the

conference betwene John Rainoldes and John Hart”

(London 1584). The present ed. is a re-issue of John

Barnes’ 1610 Oxford ed. “The practice of holding

private conferences with Catholic priests in prison

and of publishing them in support of the Protestant

cause had already been followed by William Fulke...

Subsequently, John Reynolds [1549-1607] arranged

a similar conference, with better success, with the

seminary priest John Hart (who was later received

into the Society of Jesus). His report of it, published

with Hart’s approval, went into several editions, and

was also translated into Latin – though it was not till

1610 that the translation was eventually published

by order of Archbishop Bancroft” (Milward p. 60).

Title within elaborate woodcut border. Printed

within ruled borders. Old ownership entry at top

of title (partly erased) with mention “prohibitus”.
