projects. The present rare album depicts the Castle of Pierrefonds, the favorite restoration project of
Napoleon III, who wanted to make there his imperial residence. Rather than basing his work on the
strict history of the building, Viollet-le-Duc produced more a work of invention than restoration.

Collection complète en 12 vol. Intéressant ensemble de portraits supposés avoir été collectionnés
par un amateur dès les débuts de la photographie (Daguerre et Niepce) jusqu’en 1950, de Louis-
Philippe au président Auriol. L’ensemble en réalité composé par M. Devries: “... passé maître dans
l’art du fac-similé, sa maison d’édition était en partie spécialisée dans la reproduction de documents
de la BNF (...). On le sait également grand collectionneur de plaques photographiques et c’est sans
doute dans ses fonds personnels qu’il s’est fourni pour nous livrer cette série d’albums” (blog du

officiel du jeune couple, probablement avant le mariage. Rupprecht de Bavière (1869-1955) épousa
Marie Gabrielle (1878-1912) en 1900; la jeune femme était la soeur d’Elisabeth, future reine
des Belges par son mariage avec Albert Ier de Belgique. Günther était e.a. le photographe de la

Photos kept in a filing box in openworked wood with an incorporated sliding magnifying glass.
The viewing system with magnifying glass is called a
graphoscope:
a 19th-century device used in
parlors in order to enhance the viewing of photographs and text. A photo/card holder was usually
also included although our copy with a larger photo holder is rather rare. In gilt lettering on the
front “Pa[l]es[t]i[n]e 189[2]”. The box shows four compartments for the accompanying photos.

Ali, Alexandria in the 1870s. He photographed the effects of the bombardment of Alexandria
in 1882 and published an album of views.
