Joseph Nourse (1754-1841) was the first United States Registar of the Treasury whose

career spanned forty years and six presidential administrations. He played a key role in

administering the finances of the new Republic. Lafayette had loaned money to the young

Republic and may be included in the line : “Foreign officers, the interest whereof payable

at the House of Mr Grand in Paris”. An unsigned version of that document can be found
