l'helléniste et Président du Parlement de Bourgogne Jacques de Vintimille (1512?-1582) de
l'unique oeuvre de l'historien romain d'expression grecque (175-249). Illustré d'un in texto
gravé sur bois, titre entouré d'un cadre ornementé et texte agrémenté de larges initiales
ornementés ou historiées. Ex. cerné de filets tracés à la main.

▲ Provenance : Valentin Conrart, 1603-1675 (supra libros inclus dans les doublures;
# Olivier, Hermal & de Roton, 928). Conrart organisait chez lui des réunions d'hommes
de lettres qui inspirèrent l'idée de l'Académie française au cardinal de Richelieu. Il en fut
nommé secrétaire perpétuel en 1635; Robert Hoe (ex-libris sur cuir brun).

Rare edition
of the commentary on the works of Caesar edited by the archaeologist and
architect from Verona Giovanni Giocondo (1433-c. 1515) who designed the Palazzo del
Consiglio for Maximilian I in Verona and built the Pont Notre-Dame in Paris (rebuilt in
1853). Illustrated with 5 wood-engravings figuring fortified cities or parts of their fortifications
(Marseille, Bourges, Alesia, Uxellodunum), the first representation of the bridge accross the
Rhine built by Caesar and with 2 maps on double pages (Gaul and Spain). The second part
is composed of notes by the Swiss humanist and poet Henricus Glareanus (1488-1563) on
the Gallic and Civil wars relations by Caesar. Text decorated with historiated initials figuring
mostly cherubs and with 3 marks of Gryphius.
