restaurated tear, one tear with small loss of text in lf. 118, rare contemporary handwritten notes in Greek).

Modern binding : vellum, ribbed spine, brown sprinkled edges (flyleaves renewed).

Most famous work of Plutarch (46-125) presenting biographies of Greek and Romans

arranged by pairs edited by Simon Grynaeus (1493-1541), German scholar and theologian

of the Protestant reformation. Text entirely in Greek (except the dedication) decorated with

ornemental initials; marks of Cratander on the title-page and on the back of last leaf. The

first edition of Plutarch's work by Grynaeus was published in 1531.

Bound by H. Wood : red morocco, boards encirceld with three gilt

fillets, gilt decorated ribbed spine, gilt double fillets on the edges,

gilt fillets and roll-stamps on the turn ins, gilt edges (upper joint

partly and very slightly split, lower edges and corners slightly

dulled, flyleaves renewed).

Reprint of the edition of 1536 also printed by

Robert Estienne of this posthumous anthology

of the main works of the French diplomat de Baïf

(1496-1547). The 1

st

part (De re navali) includes his

monograph on naval architecture and is illustrated

with 21 woodcuts throughout the text (2 repeated),

the 2nd one (De re vestiaria) comprises his treatise

on ancient attire and contains 3 large woodcuts,

the 3rd part (De vasculis) with 7 woodcuts

comprehends his work on ancient vases. The last

essay, not illustrated, is

the first work

on colour

and is attributed to the philosopher Antonio Telesio

(1482-1534). Five of the woodcuts are signed with

the Lorraine cross which is the cypher of Geoffroy
