Contemporary emblazoned binding : calf, gilt arms on the boards dated 1751 on the upper one, gilt ribbed

of Eusebius' famous works on the superiority of the Christianim over all pagan

religions, the personality of Jesus Christ, history (of Church and the world from Abraham to

Constantine) and Apollonius of Tyana (considered in the 4

th

cent. as Jesus Christ). Eusebius

(c. 263-339), historian, exegete, Christian polemicist and scholar Biblical canon, became

bishop of Cesarea in 314. He is considered as the father of Church History as his writings

are very important for the first three centuries of Christianity. Very neat typography and very

fresh copy opening on a typographical title surrounded by a woodcut frame figuring the

Evangelists, Saint Pieter and Saint Paul on the sides.

Very rare reunion

of the doctrinal works of the French monk Cassian (360/365-433/435)

and the Syrian monk John Climacus or John Sinaites (from the 5

th

or the 6

th

century), both

considered as Saint by the Catholic and the Orthodox Churches. Translated and with the

commentaries by Denis the Cartusian (1402-1471), famous Belgian theologian and mystic

called the "Doctor extaticus". Treatises explaining how to reach perfection : (1). Cassian's

about the monastic life and obstacles a monk has to fight (anger, avidity, vanity...), his

memories of Egypt and dialogues with the Desert Fathers,- (2). Climacus' on the 30 years

of the Christ hidden life to resume the monastical experience and to reach the perfection

in 30 "gradus". The second part of the volume contains the commentaries of Denis the

Cartusian on the famous treatise of Climacus.

Neat typography with initial letters, some large figuring cherubs, and Novasianus' mark

on title-page by Anton Woensam (1492/1500-1541), famous German painter and wood-

engraver.

and the monk Tyrannius

Rufinus or Rufinus of Aquileia (344/345-411), famous as translator of Greek patristic works

(many works of Origen are known thanks to his translation). Given 2 month's after Erasmus'

death by one of his friend, the editor, author and lawyer Beatus Rhenanus (1485-1547). Early

postincunabulum of the commentaries on the Bible, the dogmatical works (philosophical

exposition of catholicism, on the lamentation and exhortation to martydom), the forgeries

of writings during Origen's lifetime and the famous polemical work answering Celsius'

attacks against Christianism. Origen, from Alexandria (184/184-253/254), considered by

Erasmus as the most important theologian, lead an ascetic life and and was a defensor of
