s.d. Etching and tool engraving, 42,5 x 52,3 cm; engr. names, Latin verse caption & dedication.

Underlaid, right lower corner defect. (lacking +/- 8 x 7 cm incl. the last words of the dedic. with

Vorsterman’s name, visibly restored). Still a good impression.

Only state of this plate representing peasants fighting over a game of cards. Vorsterman dedicated

it to Jan Bruegel the Elder. “Possibly reproduced by Vorsterman after Rubens’ painted copy, after

a lost drawing by Bruegel (...) Renger, however, pointed out the many differences between the print

and the Rubens’ versions, therefore proposing the possibility that Vorsterman worked from the

original Bruegel drawing at the house of Jan Bruegel” (Hollstein).

of the Cistercian order and the Count of Ursel, both with their coats-of-arms.
