projection surrounded by clouds and wind-heads with their names in banners. In the oceans are

depicted wales & sea monsters. The continents are in rough outline. In the lower left corner the

woodcutter’s initials DK (David Kandel).

Attractive oval woodcut map showing the “modern” world in the later issues of Münster’s

“Cosmographia”. Title in gothic. Corners decorated by a florid vine leaf patern.

Fair example

of Munster’s second ancient map of the World, based upon the writings of Ptolemy. The traditional

classical world is surrounded by clouds and 12 wind-heads (their Latin names in banners). The

continents have unexpected shapes and are all connected by a great southern continent, “Terra

incognito secundum Ptolemaeum”.

“Tabula Geographicae Cl. Ptolemaei Ad Mentem Autoris Restitutae Et Emendatae Per Gerardum

Mercatorem” with subsequent editions in Cologne (1584), in Frankfurt and Amsterdam (1605) and

in Leiden and Amsterdam (1618-1619).
