major work of the Spanish chronicler A. de Guevara (1481-1545). Pt. 2 deals with the Revolt of
the Comuneros (1520) against Charles V, pt. 3 the “Arte del marear y de los inventores de ella”
(1539) about life on ships (e.g. one of the earliest accounts of seasickness). Title within border of
type ornaments. Printed in 2 cols. Old bookpl. François Grognard.

(1st: Antwerp 1553). Woodcut mark on title. Some ff. with cont. marginal ms. notes. Old ownership

pure doctrine (...) en seco(n)d lieu, d’autant que la parole de Dieu n’est pas donnee seulement

1st ed. of Vives’ masterpiece
, a fundamental humanist commentary on Augustine’s magnum opus.
Erasmus enthrusted the young Vives with this formidable task, in order to add it to his own edition
of Augustine’s collected works. The edition was based on manuscripts found in Bruges and Cologne,
and dedicated to Henry VIII of England.
