as Janin or Jan Nicolaes, was a pharmacist in Aalst during the 18th c., his son Leonardus was an
alderman

Very rare 1st edition
of this description of Rome by the Belgian poet J. Rycquius (1587-1627)
describing Rome’s antique buildings, incl. a plan of a classical temple drawn by Palladio (p. 156).
Ryckius, settled in Louvain after travelling in Italy, he became for a short time (c. 1614) Canon of
the Cathedral at Ghent and went back to Italy where he was professor “eloquentiae” at Bologna.
Illustrations
: 2 half-page engr. plates, 1 of which representing the she-wolf with Romulus and
Remus, 1 full-page woodcut of a plan of a temple by Palladio and numerous small woodcuts of
coins in the text. Apparently the book was issued in 3 states: one with dedication to Cardinal Scipio
Cobellutius; one (this copy) with dedic. to J. de Bette (Lord of Lede) & one without dedic. Mark on
title. Ownership entry on t.-p.
