1st edition, 1st issue

of the major theological work of Jacopo Sadoleto (1477-1547), papal secretary

and bishop of Carpentras. In this long commentary on Romans (dedicated to Francis I), “he

undertook to argue from an inherent justice which the believer activates by his “bona voluntas” in

the beginnings of salvation, ostensibly without the foregoing operation of grace. It was disapproved

by the Paris faculty of theology and placed under a ban in the Vatican, pending correction and

revision” (Contemp. Erasmus III 184). Large woodcut mark on title, a smaller one on Ff4v. Old

marg. annotations and underlinings. 19th-c. name Lelièvre on inside front cover.
