Two most charming treatises (1st Milan 1604-1606) by the Belgian humanist and philologist E.

Puteanus (Venlo 1574-Leuven 1646), mostly found together. The 1st is dedicated to Charles, duc

de Croÿ et d’Aerschot, the 2nd to M. Plouvier. It is a “Praise of the art of saying much in only a

few witty and elegant words” (Laconismus). The 2nd treatise adds many examples cast in the same

mould, mostly short statements or testimonies of friendship, as eloquently formulated as possible,

originally sent to his friends when he lived in Milan (1596-1603) i.a. to Just van Raphelengen,

Ph. Rubens, J. Wowerius and to his Milanese friends. All completely reworked and republished is

a new order. Puteanus was an encyclopedist and dreamt of re-establishing in Belgium the cult of

eloquence which he had derived from Italy.
