Magnificent publication on the Antwerp Entry of the Spanish Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in 1635.
The production was delayed on account of financial problems, the untimely death of a major
collaborator (Rubens, May 1640), and almost halted by the death of Ferdinand himself (November
1641). The ed. has a number of variants, described by Arents. The present copy is complete but
for the half-title, and includes the
rare equestrian portrait of Ferdinand
(printed for 200 de luxe
copies only). Copy with
40
full-page (or double-page)
engravings by Th. van Tulden after Rubens,
depicting the arches and stages built and the paintings adorning them,
a nice view of the Antwerp
cathedral and a large bird’s-eye view of the city of Antwerp
(39 plates, two with 3 engravings each,
+ the additional equestrian portrait). The t.-p. has the name of the engraver “Iac. Neeffs” and the
original imprint (Arents a); the colophon bears the
exact date 1642 (and not the intended date
“1641”)
. 46 small engravings in text (coins and medals). 19th-c. presentation inscription pasted
on front endpaper: “Mr. P.J. Huybrechts à son ami
Henry Leys
” (i.e. the Romantic painter, 1815-
1869).
