Two fragments of an unidentified religious text

France?, 14th c.?], vellum ff., c. 10,5/10 x 15 cm, taken from a binding (some soiling and sm. holes).
In good condition.

A religious or mystical allegory (?), perhaps from the Languedoc: “la uoie de prudence”, “ensengne
de la diuine ymagine”, “dame mere eglise”, “ton exil del ciel”, “gardes ne someilhent”, “la raison
de ceste songe”, “troeuer la grace de si grand espous”. Needs to be studied.

Fragment of large manuscript leaf
(France?, 15th c.), taken from a binding and very def.
(stained, torn, wrinkled, tears and holes). One initial in blue and red with penwork extending into
the margin. The text appears to be (Pseudo-) Abdias of Babylon, “Historia certaminis apostolici”
(History of the Apostolic Contest), a
10th-c. New Testament Apocryph
(“Post mysteria autem facta
prostrauit se ad pedes Beati Clementis Theodora dicans virum suum curam agentem...”).

c. 29 x 40 cm, written in brown ink, in 2 cols of 36 ll. Framed, with both sides visible (not unframed).
In good condition (sm. holes and tears).

Interesting bifolium from a (liturgical?) manuscript containing biblical quotations (Isaiah, Gospels
of Luke, Marc, Matthew, Paul’s Epistle to Romans etc.) in larger script, with a commentary in
smaller script. Rubricated.

Copie soigneuse et calligraphique par 2 mains (odes 1-3 et 4-5) des 5 premières odes (sur 6) de ce
violent pamphlet contre Philippe d’Orléans (1674-1723, Régent entre 1715 et 1722). Ex. sur beau
vergé. Sur les pp. de droite, le texte des odes, sur les pp. de gauche, les “remarques”; à partir de la 4e
ode, le texte est écrit en continu et comporte moins de notes. Sur la dernière p., citation en latin du livre
de Job, évocation de l’oraison funèbre prononcée par Poncet évêque d’Angers le 4/2/1724 et dernière
épigramme contre le Régent. La 1ère édition de l’oeuvre qui, interdite et détruite, se répandit surtout
par l’intermédiaire de divers manuscrits, date de 1723; elle ne contenait que 3 odes et est extrêment
rare. Suite à sa parution, La Grange-Chancel (1677-1758) fut incarcéré plusieurs années aux îles
Sainte-Marguerite. Il existe différentes copies mss de l’oeuvre, comportant souvent des variantes. Ex-
libris armorié Robert de Billy (1869-1953, diplomate français proche de Marcel Proust) et ex-libris
monogr. non identifié.
