Description
Powerful woodcuts from a suite of 43, illustrating the "Life of Christ", made c. 1507 by the Strasburg artist Wechtlin (Hans Wächtlin, c. 1485-after 1526) – "nur in verschiedenen Zusammenstellungen, nie in ihrer Gesamtzahl, in Büchern verwendet" (Muther). A number of them 1st appeared in "Das Leben Jesu Christi gezogen aus den vier Evangelisten" (Knobloch 1508), and are later to be found in Strasburg editions (1514, 1522) by J. Schott of the “Postille” of the Strasburg preacher Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg (1445-1510). One with German printed text on verso. Collector’s stamp (Rodowitz ?).
