Description
One of 9 photogr. featuring Einstein, made in Pasadena, California in 1932 by Anton Schaller (Munich 1900- Pasadena 1974), German-born pioneer of color photography and early motion-picture, who immigrated to the US in 1923 and never returned to Europe. There were taken with a Leica 35 mm during a visit of Einstein to the California Institute of Technology. Schaller has left following anecdotal material : "As I walked through the grounds of CalTech, I spotted almost immediately the flowing mane of Einstein's white hair and so I approached him and introduced myself. I was much the younger man than he was and I noticed right away the smile-like penetration of his eyes. As I started clicking, I noticed a group of ladies standing around and one of them said in a very audible voice "You know, Einstein does not understand a word of English" and again Einstein's eyes got hold of me and with a big grin he said "Diese Leute bilden sich ein, dass ich ein Dummkopf bin". Einstein liked the shots because none of them were artificially posed and therefore looked very natural.
